Your electrical panel is the nerve center of your home — every light, outlet, and appliance runs through it. Most DFW homeowners never think about it until something goes wrong. But by that point, you may already be dealing with a fire hazard. Here are five signs your panel is overdue for replacement, and what to do about each one.

Most Common
Your Breakers Trip Constantly
A breaker that trips once in a while is doing its job. A breaker that trips every week — or every time you run the microwave and the coffee maker at the same time — is telling you something. Your panel can’t handle your home’s current electrical load.
This is especially common in DFW homes built before 2000. The average household used around 2,000 kWh per year in the 1980s. Today that number is closer to 11,000. Older panels simply weren’t designed for modern appliances, smart home devices, and EV chargers.

Fire Risk
You Smell Burning Near Your Panel
A burning smell — even faint, even occasional — near your breaker box is never normal. It usually means wiring is overheating or arcing inside the panel, which is one of the leading causes of residential electrical fires in Texas.
If you smell burning plastic, charred wood, or anything resembling a hot electrical smell coming from your panel, turn off the main breaker and call a licensed electrician immediately. Do not wait on this one.

Outdated Technology
You Have a Federal Pacific or Zinsco Panel
Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) Stab-Lok panels and Zinsco panels were installed in millions of American homes between the 1950s and 1980s — including a lot of homes in the Dallas–Fort Worth area. Both have been linked to breakers that fail to trip during overloads, which means no protection when you need it most.
If your panel has “Stab-Lok” written on it, or if your breakers are coloured (Zinsco panels often have multi-coloured breakers), replacement isn’t optional — it’s urgent.

Visible Damage
You See Scorch Marks, Rust, or Corrosion
Open your breaker box and take a look. If you see scorch marks around any breaker, rust on the panel door, or corrosion on the wiring connections, your panel has been compromised. Rust and corrosion increase electrical resistance, which generates heat — the enemy of a safe electrical system.
Moisture getting into a panel is particularly common in garages and utility rooms. If your panel is in one of these areas, check it every year.

Capacity Issue
Your Panel Is Under 100 Amps — or Has No Room Left
Homes built before 1970 often have 60-amp service. The current minimum standard for a modern home is 200 amps, and homes with EV chargers, hot tubs, or large HVAC systems may need more. An undersized panel is a bottleneck that creates constant overload risk.
Even if your panel is 100 or 150 amps, if every breaker slot is full and you’ve started doubling up (two wires on one breaker — a practice called “double-tapping”), you’re already past capacity and creating a code violation.
